What Is an Aura?

An aura is the energetic field that emanates from and surrounds every living thing — an invisible but perceptible layer of electromagnetic and subtle energy that reflects the state of your physical body, emotional patterns, mental activity, and spiritual development. The concept appears across nearly every ancient wisdom tradition: in Vedic texts as the prana body, in Chinese medicine as qi, in Western occultism as the etheric field, in Kirlian photography as measurable luminescence around living tissue.

You've felt auras without knowing the name for them. The person who makes you inexplicably uncomfortable before they've said a word. The room that relaxes you the moment you walk in. The friend who somehow always makes you feel seen. That's energy perception — the translation of subtle information your nervous system is already processing. Learning to read aura colors is simply learning the language for what you already sense.

An aura isn't a single flat color. It's layered — a closest-to-body layer reflecting physical and emotional state, a middle layer tied to personality and habitual patterns, and an outer layer connecting to spiritual development and life direction. Most people have a dominant color (stable across years) plus one or two secondary colors that shift with life phase.

The 10 Aura Colors

Red Aura aura card
Color 1 of 10

Red Aura

"The room shifts when you walk in."

Red aura people carry a charge. They don't enter a space — they claim it, whether they mean to or not. There's a heat to them, a pulse just beneath the skin. Being around a red aura feels like standing next to a fireplace in winter — warming, maybe slightly scorching, impossible to ignore. They're operating at full frequency, all the time.

When this color is dominant

Red is dominant when you're in a new survival mode — a new city, new job, new relationship that demands you show up differently. Also: grief that hasn't found language yet, sexual awakening, a phase of ferocious ambition. Body leading, mind catching up.

Shadow side

Tips into aggression, dominance, or rage without a container. The drive that builds empires turns inward as anxiety, chronic tension, or control issues.

Orange Aura aura card
Color 2 of 10

Orange Aura

"The spark in every room, every story, every plan."

Orange aura people radiate a creative warmth that makes you want to tell them things. There's a looseness to them — adaptable, quick, full of ideas in cascades. Being around orange feels like the best conversation you've had in months: unexpected, alive, slightly chaotic in the most electric way.

When this color is dominant

Orange is dominant during a creative renaissance, a project consuming you, a social period of expansion, or rebuilding after contraction. Also when you're learning to want things again after numbness.

Shadow side

When imbalanced, diffuses. The ideas never land, the commitments evaporate, the warmth becomes a performance. Restlessness curdles into self-sabotage.

Yellow Aura aura card
Color 3 of 10

Yellow Aura

"Bright mind, warm light, relentless questions."

Yellow aura people have a quality that feels like sunlight through a window — clarifying, energizing, impossible to stay gloomy around for long. They've already read three books on the topic before the conversation starts. Being around yellow makes you feel smarter, lighter, like the world has more possibility in it.

When this color is dominant

Dominant during a learning phase — new field, new identity, expansion through knowledge. Also when emerging from a dark period through understanding rather than just feeling.

Shadow side

Anxious perfectionism, over-intellectualization of emotion, an inability to act without certainty. The mind spins without traction.

Green Aura aura card
Color 4 of 10

Green Aura

"The healer who forgets they need healing too."

Green aura people have a groundedness that feels almost environmental — being around them is like stepping into a clearing in the woods. You exhale. They carry an invisible emotional steadiness, a capacity to hold space others sense immediately and lean into.

When this color is dominant

Dominant during a caretaking phase — healing a relationship, taking care of family, rebuilding something broken. Also when your heart is re-opening after having been shut.

Shadow side

Self-sacrifice at the expense of self. People-pleasing, codependency, resentment disguised as martyrdom. Giving from an empty well.

Blue Aura aura card
Color 5 of 10

Blue Aura

"Still water running somewhere you can't quite see."

Blue aura people have a quality of composed depth — the ones who know more than they say, process faster than they speak, seem calm but are running a full ocean underneath. Being around blue feels like being truly heard, maybe for the first time. They don't need to fill the silence.

When this color is dominant

Dominant when processing something that needs language — writing it out, talking it through. Also during quiet rebuilding when you need the noise to stop.

Shadow side

Withdrawal, emotional unavailability, over-intellectualization of feelings. The calm becomes a wall. The depth becomes isolation.

Indigo Aura aura card
Color 6 of 10

Indigo Aura

"You knew before they said it."

Indigo aura people operate on a frequency most people can't quite tune into. They walk into rooms and feel the architecture of the energy before they register anything visually. They dream differently. They pick up on the tension under polite surface, the grief behind the joke. Being around an indigo feels like being seen on a cellular level.

When this color is dominant

Dominant during awakening periods — when the veil feels thin, synchronicities are stacking, you're being asked to trust your knowing. Also during deep ancestral or shadow work.

Shadow side

Isolation, escapism, sensory overwhelm that makes ordinary life feel unbearable. Sensitivity as gift becomes sensitivity as curse. Boundary collapse.

Violet Aura aura card
Color 7 of 10

Violet Aura

"Here to change something. Even if they can't name it yet."

Violet aura people carry a weight and a luminosity simultaneously — they feel called, even if they're not sure to what. There's a visionary quality that can read as intense, otherworldly, ahead of its time. Being around violet feels like sitting with someone who can see how the story ends. Every room they leave is slightly different.

When this color is dominant

Dominant during transformation and purpose-alignment phases — being called toward your actual work, an old identity dying before something new has named itself. Often arrives 20s-early 30s.

Shadow side

Grandiosity, disconnection from the material world, a god-complex dressed as spiritual mission. The calling justifies avoiding ordinary human things.

Gold Aura aura card
Color 8 of 10

Gold Aura

"Once-in-a-generation energy. And they carry it quietly."

Gold aura people have a quality that stops conversation in rooms — not because of what they say but because of what they carry. There's a settled authority to them, a warmth that doesn't perform, a wisdom that arrives without being asked for. Being around gold is like being in the presence of someone who has come through something and been refined by it, not destroyed.

When this color is dominant

Emerges after significant integration — after loss, after transformation, after the long dark night that broke something open rather than just breaking it. Rarely a young person's color.

Shadow side

Spiritual arrogance. Or the exhaustion of being everyone's anchor with no one anchoring them. The light becomes a burden.

White Aura aura card
Color 9 of 10

White Aura

"The frequency before words."

White aura people feel like they exist at a slightly different altitude than everyone else — not superior, but cleaner. There's a translucence to them, a quality of not being entirely of this dimension. Being around white energy is both deeply peaceful and slightly disorienting, the way silence after long noise is disorienting.

When this color is dominant

Appears at peak moments of spiritual clarity — after intensive practice, after near-death experience, after long deep solitude. Can also appear briefly at thresholds: births, deaths, completions.

Shadow side

Disconnection from body, desire, the mess of ordinary human life. The purity becomes inability to land, to commit, to be here.

Black Aura aura card
Color 10 of 10

Black Aura

"Becoming. In the dark. On purpose."

Black aura people are in a chrysalis — which is not a comfortable place, and they know it. There's a guardedness to them that isn't hostility; it's the protective shell of someone in the middle of a profound internal rearrangement. Being around black aura energy feels charged, like the space before lightning. They're not broken. They're dissolving an old self.

When this color is dominant

Appears in major transition periods — end of relationship, career dissolution, spiritual crisis, death in family. The color of the in-between, the liminal. Not where you were. Not yet where you're going.

Shadow side

When stuck rather than moving through, becomes stagnation disguised as depth. The chrysalis becomes a comfort zone.

Red Aura

Aura Vocabulary

The terminology underneath the practice. Knowing the language sharpens what you perceive.

Aura

The energetic field that emanates from and surrounds every living thing. Across Vedic (prana body), Chinese medicine (qi), Western occultism (etheric field), and Kirlian photography.

Layered aura

An aura isn't a single flat color — it has layers. Closest-to-body reflects physical and emotional state. Middle layer holds personality and habit. Outer layer connects to spiritual development.

Primary color

Your dominant aura — stable across years, reflecting your core nature. The one most readable to others, the one most consistent with your identity.

Secondary color

Subordinate to the primary. Shifts more with life phase, mood, and what you're moving through. Often visible to perceptive practitioners but not to casual readers.

Aura shift

The phenomenon of secondary or even primary colors changing over time. Spiritual awakening, major loss, deep healing work, or trauma can all trigger shifts.

Kirlian photography

Electrophotography technique developed in the 1930s that captures coronal discharge around objects. Some practitioners use it as evidence of the aura field.

Soft-focus reading

Method of perceiving auras through peripheral vision rather than direct stare. The skill of letting the eyes go slack and the perception come to you.

Energy sensing

Perceiving the aura field through tactile/sensory awareness rather than vision. Holding hands 8 inches apart and feeling the resistance is a basic exercise.

How the Quiz Scores

Step 1
22 weighted questions

Each question presents 5 options weighted toward 1–3 specific colors. The questions cover energy timing, emotional baseline, social tendencies, recent life context, body sensations, and aesthetic resonance.

Step 2
Primary + secondary scoring

Highest-scoring color wins as primary. The runner-up shows as secondary. You also see the Lore archetype it maps to and a personalized AI reading drawn from your actual answers.

Step 3
AI-personalized reading

Your specific answers pass to a generative AI that writes a 200-word reading referencing what you actually said. Not a database paragraph — a reading written for you, in this moment.

Tips for an Accurate Read

A few things to know before you take it.

Answer for your current state, not your idealized self

The quiz reads who you are right now. If you're in a deep Black or chaotic Red phase, that's the truth — answer for the truth. Aspirational answers produce false readings.

Notice the questions about recent life events

These are diagnostic. The questions about what's been happening lately, what's been ending, what's been building — these tell the quiz which color is currently dominant in your field.

The secondary color is usually the more interesting one

Your primary is what people see. Your secondary is what's actually running. If you got Yellow primary with Indigo secondary, the Indigo is what's making you you. Don't dismiss it.

Take it again after major life events

Aura colors shift. After a breakup, after a move, after an illness, after a creative breakthrough — the field reorganizes. The Green who became a Violet after motherhood, the Red who became a Gold after burnout integration. Re-take to see the arc.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this aura quiz?+

It's built on the 10 aura colors used across Vedic, occult, and modern energetic traditions. 22 questions sort across emotional baseline, energy timing, social tendencies, recent life context, and aesthetic resonance. Each option carries weighted points to 1-3 specific colors. The runner-up is shown as your secondary aura.

Why does the AI reading feel personalized?+

After scoring your colors, your specific answers are passed to a generative AI that writes a custom 200-word reading referencing what you actually said. It's not a paragraph from a database — it's a reading written for you, from you.

Can my aura color change?+

Yes. Your core color tends to be stable across years, but secondary colors shift with life phase. Black auras specifically are transitional — they almost always resolve into Violet, Indigo, or Gold once you've moved through the chrysalis.

Is a black aura bad?+

No. This is the most pervasive misconception. Black indicates a chrysalis state — profound internal rearrangement. People with black auras are usually doing the deepest inner work of their lives. The color is temporary; what it protects is permanent.

Do aura colors map to chakras?+

Loosely. The seven primary aura colors correspond to the seven main chakras (red=root, orange=sacral, yellow=solar plexus, green=heart, blue=throat, indigo=third eye, violet=crown). The three special-tier colors (gold, white, black) operate beyond the chakra system.

What's the secondary color in my result?+

Most people have a dominant color and one or two secondary colors that shift more fluidly. The secondary tells you the texture or current state — a Blue with a Black secondary is processing something deep; a Blue with a Gold secondary is integrating wisdom.

How does this connect to the Lore app?+

Each aura color maps to one of Lore's 5 psychological archetypes — Sovereign, Ronin, Oracle, Outlaw, or Muse. Lore is the deeper experience: archetype-based daily readings, AI-powered Sage chat, and cinematic portraits of who you are. Take the quiz first; the app is optional.
